We have added a portrait photoshoot from the Tribeca Film Festival 2015 to promote The Survivalist.
Most magazines rely on celebrities to create buzz, but Vogue Italia prefers top models to tabloid names. Steven Meisel has shot only a few actresses for the magazine’s cover, and those chosen are more likely to be seen in independent films than on gossip sites. The latest beauty to grace the front page is actress Mia Goth, who covers the March issue in a moody shot and poses as part of a portfolio of talents from creative fields. Stylists, actors, directors, artists, and writers are photographed alongside models like Gigi Hadid and Freja Beha Erichsen for the feature titled “Alchemy.” With everyone from Joel Schumacher to Zachary Quinto coming together for the shoot, the on-set vibe was unique and collaborative. “It was wonderful,” says Goth. “Everybody was so in tune to one another, all working together toward creating the best work possible. It felt like one big family. I felt so blessed to be in the company of such talented people.”
As one of the stars of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Volume II and the upcoming film Everest, where she acts opposite Keira Knightley and Jake Gyllenhaal, Goth is a talent to watch. Though she’s still a Hollywood newcomer, she is no stranger to fashion. Signed with Storm Models, Goth got her first taste of the industry after Meisel shot her for Miu Miu’s Spring 2015 campaign. Working with Meisel left a lasting impression on her. “When you’re being shot by Steven, everything feels elevated but true. He has a great eye for atmosphere, great at communicating ideas, and he’s interested in character. It doesn’t feel like working with a photographer, it feels like working with a director. He can convey an entire story in one image. It takes a certain confidence to let your subjects be free, and when I’m on his set, I’m truly liberated.”
That sense of liberation allowed Goth to bring a bit of playfulness to her on-set performance. “I think there’s an element of acting in everything that we do, and definitely on this shoot. There was a beginning, middle, and an end. All of my movements were motivated by a need, be it survival, lust, desire, etc. It’s never ‘stand there and do this.’ We dance together. I think Steven has an actor’s sensitivity. He feels his photo shoots. I think there’s a little bit of Steven in every shot he takes, and in that way, much like Lars, his subjects become him. As an actress on a Steven Meisel shoot, your experience can only be that of wish fulfillment.”
Miu Miu has continued its trend of casting emerging Hollywood actresses for its campaigns, tapping Nymphomaniac star Mia Goth, French actress Marine Vacth and British talent Imogen Poots for its SS15 images shot by Steven Meisel. Goth is currently known as Shia LaBeouf’s girlfriend, but is a rising star in her own right – she’s slated to appear in this year’s climbing epic Everest alongside Keira Knightley and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Miu Miu’s first campaign for 2015 is set to break in February issues, starting with Harper’s Bazaar UK edition. For now, you can head over to the gallery and see x04 photos of Mia …
